8 - People

Banner image : In 1949 someone bet $100 that Herman Rofihe (in clown suit) would not push Fred Rhodenizer down King Street in a wheelbarrow. They lost. This was part of one of the Kinsman "Gag Parade" fund raisers. Welcome to the last section in our project! While people played a prominent part of the photos displayed so far, we thought we would spend the last week looking at people specific activities.

Lutheran Picnic Grounds at Wentzell Lake -- a popular gathering spot in the early 1900s

Lana Veinotte writes ... The Lutheran Picnic Grounds were on the corner of the present Five Pound Road and Hwy 10. The first group of directors purchased ten acres of woodland at Wentzells Lake. Eventually the Picnic Grounds were sold and the proceeds were used to purchase land on Big Mush-a-Mush Lake in Cornwall where Lutheran Camp Mush-a-Mush was constructed in the late 1940s.

Evelyn Croft-Palmer standing (fiddle) and sitting is Edith Croft-Rafuse on the guitar and sitting is Harold Rafuse on the guitar. This group provided music in many homes in the late 30’s and also provided the background music for MacKenzie Bus Lines for their radio commercials. Harold was a WWII veteran and retired RCMP and at age 65 became County Magistrate and retired at age 90. Many a home turned up the carpets on a Saturday night while The Bridgewater Hillbillies provided an evening of good toe-tapping music. Photo from Paul Harmon courtesy of Barbara Palmer-Corkum

Lana Veinotte writes ... The Presbyterian, the Lutheran and the Anglican church women started sewing circles in the 1920s and 1930s. They made quilts and hooked rugs to raise money for their local churches. Although it involved hundreds of back-breaking hours, it was part of their social life. T

he three women hooking a rug were known as the 'happy hookers' from West Northfield. They are left to right: Leda Oickle, Eva Dauphinee and Lois Sarty. Most of the ladies who used to quilt have since passed away. Some of the ladies today do a bit of quilting but not in a group. Life styles have changed and so have their fingers and backs. The three ladies in the picture have passed away: Leda in 1987, Eva in 1987 and Lois in 1984.

In addition to the quilting and hooking parties, they often had social evenings when the men were invited to home made ice cream and pie sales.

Our last picture of the project shows how people use the LaHave River Trail in 2017. The modes of transport have changed over the last 150 years, but it still performs a vital role in the community.
